Think about it: while some of our leaders are busy playing musical chairs with party defections or denying viral videos of alleged arrests, our youth are out here trying to equip themselves for the future. Kenya saw 42.1% of its internet users aged 16+ using ChatGPT by July 2025! Nigeria's working-age population adopting AI tools hit 9.3% by mid-2025, and South Africa is leading the continent with a 21.1% AI adoption rate. The potential here is HUGE – AI can add trillions to our GDP, create millions of jobs, and even tackle issues in health, agriculture, and finance.
But here's the ginger: what's the point of our brilliant youth embracing this digital revolution if the systems meant to support them are crumbling? We're talking about countries like Nigeria still grappling with power challenges that hinder data center growth, or governments that fail to invest in the necessary infrastructure and ethical frameworks. We're seeing a rapid transformation in the global economy driven by AI, yet political instability, widespread corruption, and a lack of clear vision from our leadership continue to squander our potential.
This isn't just about learning how to use ChatGPT for school assignments or for side hustles. This is about national competitiveness, transparency, and demanding accountability. Imagine AI-powered systems that expose corruption in government contracts, or streamline public services, making them less susceptible to the 'man-knows-man' syndrome. Imagine leveraging AI to combat misinformation that destabilises our institutions, something the WEF has already flagged as a major global risk for 2026.
