Let’s set the scene: a hot Saturday, Mr. Muscles (future boyfriend material) invites me out for “dessert.” As in, he wants to see if I can handle the infamous triple-scoop challenge at his favorite ice cream parlor, three towering flavors allegedly “impossible to finish.”
Midway through my heroic lick-fest, he leans in, winks, and whispers, “Think you can swallow… all that?” Wink, wink, nudge. I almost snort chocolate chip out my nose.
Honestly, the swallowing wasn’t the issue; it was the brain freeze and my general lack of enthusiasm for putting something rock-hard and chilly in my mouth. Growing up, I was never that kid obsessed with ice cream trucks. Give me cake and I’m happy. But ice cream dagger-ing my palate? That’s an acquired taste.
Still, Mr. Muscles persists, hinting about “adult” swallowing conquests like it’s the secret to ever-lasting love. I give it the ol’ college try, spoon in hand, mouth full, contorted face for the ages. Halfway in, I tap out. No shame. Not my dessert, not my ministry. He laughs, “Aw, you’re so innocent! You can’t even down dessert.”
Then he springs the Question: “So, how many desserts have you tried?” But this is clearly code for, “How much of the world’s flavors have you… tasted?” I cut my eyes at him. Sir, I can’t even count the varieties, there was flan in Paris, churros in Barcelona, bubble tea in Taipei… Should I keep going?
I pull out fingers, then toes, mentally calculating sweets, but when he sees me stuck, he gasps, “Wait, are you serious?”
Dead serious. I mean, does anyone keep track of desserts?
I toss out a “respectable” answer (leaving out the naughty sundae from my 19th birthday). He paces like a betrayed gelato shop owner, mumbling, “So you mean you’ve had… what?”
His dessert rage was lost on me, I just wanted to finish my cone in peace. But when he couldn’t get over my “ice cream tally,” I realized I was playing with flying sprinkles and needed to let him go.
Years later, at a dessert bar, a wise bartender tells me, “The official answer’s two. And if you hit 30, you can just hit reset and be a dessert virgin again.”
So now, every New Year’s Day, I declare myself a dessert virgin, ready for fresh flavors, zero guilt, and absolutely no brain freeze.
Moral of the story? Swallow if you want. Or don’t. Just keep it sweet, stay honest, and save room for cake, life’s too short for counting cones.
