Africa's "Modern" Constructions Are Climate Disasters. Our new buildings are turning our cities into ovens. They trap heat and block fresh air. It’s time to build smart again, the way our ancestors did, using simple, natural, and brilliant.

If you step outside in Lagos, Abuja, or any major Nigerian city on a hot afternoon, the heat hits you like a solid wall. Walk into one of our shiny new glass-and-concrete buildings, and what do you find? More heat. The air is still. The only way to get relief is to turn on an air conditioner—if you can afford it and if the power stays on.

That’s not development. That’s a failure of imagination. We have been copying building styles from cold countries. Glass towers and steel frames might make sense in London or New York, but in tropical Africa they are disasters. They trap heat, block natural airflow, and force millions of people into dependence on expensive imported technologies just to survive in their own homes.

Meanwhile, the real geniuses of climate-smart building practiced by our own ancestors are being forgotten.

Before the arrival of Europeans and Arabs, Nigeria had a thriving architectural tradition that was sophisticated, beautiful, and perfectly adapted to the land. In a multicultural society like Nigeria, most kingdoms had a unique architecture that reflected the climate, culture and beliefs of the people.

Let’s look at the three major groups:

The Hausa of Northern Nigeria live in a hot, dry, desert-like climate. They built their homes using simple materials like mud, stones, grasses, corn stalks, and straw for thatch roofing. Their thick mud bricks, called tubali, were sun-dried and mixed with straw for strength. These walls acted as thermal insulation, keeping interiors cool during the scorching day and warm during cold desert nights.

The Yoruba of the Southwest designed their houses around central courtyards. These open spaces did more than just look pretty, they allowed cross-ventilation and encouraged community interaction. The courtyard became the heart of the home, where air could move freely and families could gather without suffocating.

The Igbo of the Southeast built round mud-walled houses called ulo aja oto with high-pitched thatched roofs. The skeletal framework used bamboo poles, and the covering was made from palm fronds and grasses. The pitch of the roof allowed heavy tropical rain to run off easily, while the round shape helped wind flow around the building rather than slamming into a flat wall.

The Secret is in these Materials is that: Across Africa, traditional builders used what the land provided, which is the whole point - they didn’t need to import anything.

Materials included thatch, stick/wood, mud, mudbrick, rammed earth, bamboo, straw, raffia palm, stone, and even tree bark. In West Africa, mud and adobe were preferred. In forested regions, timber frames and wattle-and-daub were common. In the savannah, stone and thatch ruled.

Take the humble mud brick. In the Sahel region, where temperatures can soar past 48°C, thick adobe walls keep indoor spaces up to 15°C cooler than the outside. That is because Adobe absorbs heat slowly during the day and releases it slowly at night, acting like a natural battery for temperature regulation. No electricity required.

Bamboo, which grows abundantly across Nigeria, is another wonder material. It regenerates within 18 months, absorbs carbon, and has tensile strength that can match steel when properly treated. Yet we export most of our bamboo and timber while importing expensive steel and cement.

Even the roofs were smart. Thatch shades the thick mud walls from solar heat gain, increasing their cooling effect on the interior. Some traditional designs, like the impluvium house, collected rainwater in a central cistern. The water then evaporated, cooling the air through the same principle that makes sweating cool your skin, what scientists call evaporative cooling.

The reason these materials were preferred is simple: these designs worked. They were not accidents. They were the result of centuries of observation, trial, and refinement.

First, climate control. Thick walls, small windows placed strategically, and orientation to catch prevailing winds were all passive cooling strategies that made artificial air conditioning unnecessary. The Nubians of Egypt and Sudan, for example, mastered these techniques long before modern technology. They used sun-dried mud bricks, built thick walls, and oriented buildings to harness natural ventilation.

Second, affordability. Traditional materials cost little because they come from the ground beneath your feet. Mud, bamboo, timber, stone, laterite, these are not imported luxury goods. A study in Owerri found that laterite, stone, bamboo, timber, and clay are abundantly present and inexpensive, offering developers a meaningful cost reduction alternative. Building materials account for about 50% to 70% of the total cost of a house in Nigeria. Switching to local materials could slash that dramatically.

Third, durability. A well-built mud structure can last for generations. The Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali, made entirely of adobe, has stood for over a century and is still standing. The stone ruins of Great Zimbabwe have survived for nearly a thousand years. Traditional builders knew what they were doing.

Fourth, environmental harmony. Traditional materials are biodegradable. When a mud house eventually crumbles, it returns to the earth. No toxic waste. No environmental debt for future generations to pay. The carbon footprint of a mud brick is negligible compared to the energy-guzzling production of cement and steel.

So if traditional materials are so great, why did we abandon them?

Colonialism. The Europeans who came did not bring better building methods, they brought different ones, and they imposed them as superior. They built with imported cement, corrugated iron, and glass, and Africans who wanted to appear modern copied them. The colonial era and subsequent modern era brought a shift in Nigeria's architectural landscape. Buildings began to mimic Western styles and often lost their distinct identity.

Today, our cities are filled with boxy concrete structures. Concrete has become the “traditional” building material in a country where at least four distinctive mud-construction techniques persist. This concrete jungle creates what experts call the urban heat island effect—the concrete soaks up heat during the day and radiates it back at night, making cities significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas. As one Nigerian researcher put it, “Instead of soaking in the heat, it’s sending it back”.

Dark-colored roofing materials, which have become fashionable, absorb the sun’s energy and release it in the evening when people are back home, creating a negative cycle where upper floors become uncomfortable unless air conditioners are used.

Meanwhile, flooding worsens because concrete and asphalt prevent rainwater from seeping into the ground, turning our streets into rivers every rainy season.

The good news is that some Nigerians have noticed the absurdity. A movement called NANA, New Alternative Nigerian Architecture, is quietly gaining ground. NANA is about designing in a language that is ours, culturally grounded, climate-sensitive, and material-led.

Pioneers like Demas Nwoko, a Nigerian artist and architect, have long championed what he calls “natural synthesis” -;blending traditional African aesthetics with modern techniques. He critiques Nigeria's dependence on imported materials and advocates for local resources like laterite blocks, which he adapted into “latcrete” for construction.

Adeyemo Shokunbi and Patrick Koshoni, co-founders of Patrickwaheed Design Consultancy, developed a philosophy they call “ethno-tropical contemporary” - a fusion of cultural heritage, climate-conscious planning, and modern forms. Their Abijo Mosque in Lagos features walls finished with laterite, perforated screens that filter sunlight, and high-level louvre windows that invite natural airflow for passive cooling.

Across the continent, Burkinabé architect Francis Kéré (winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize) has shown the world that mud and adobe can be high-performance, beautiful, and globally respected. He strongly advocates adobe, adapting it to modern designs.

In Ghana, the Batakari House uses courtyards to channel prevailing breezes, promote stack ventilation, and create a protected microclimate at the building’s core. Wood batten screens reduce heat gain, and the roof configuration supports rainwater harvesting. This is not primitive building, it's sophisticated, climate-responsive architecture.

The case is overwhelming. Here’s why Nigeria, more than any other African country, needs to return to traditional materials and design principles:

  1. The Housing Crisis is Massive Nigeria has a housing deficit of nearly 30 million units. Seventy-two percent of Nigerian workers spend about 40% of their salaries on rent. We cannot build our way out of this crisis using expensive imported materials like cement and steel. Mud, bamboo, and timber are cheap, locally available, and scalable. With proper policy support, these materials could close the housing gap without bankrupting families.

  2. Climate Change is Not Coming—It’s Here Temperatures across Nigeria are projected to increase significantly, with potential heat stress affecting buildings in future climates. Our current buildings are already failing. We need structures that stay cool without air conditioning, not just to save money, but to save lives. Extreme heatwaves in the Sahel have already killed hundreds of people.

  3. Import Dependency is Economic Madness Nigeria imports vast quantities of building materials, draining foreign exchange and enriching foreign manufacturers. The local manufacturing of building materials has the potential to create thousands of jobs, stimulate economic growth, and reduce our reliance on imported materials. Every bag of cement we import is a job that could have been created in Nigeria.

  4. We Are Losing Our Cultural Identity Our cities are starting to look like everywhere else. Generic glass boxes with no connection to the land, the climate, or the people. Architecture should tell a story, our story. The NANA movement argues that Nigeria can create contemporary spaces without erasing its soul. That means reimagining traditional elements like courtyards, screens, and natural materials in fresh, innovative ways.

  5. The Knowledge is Still Here We haven’t lost the skills. Across rural Nigeria, traditional builders still construct with mud, thatch, and bamboo. Architects like Demas Nwoko have spent decades documenting and practicing these methods. Through teaching fellowships, students at Nigerian institutions are already experimenting with earth, bamboo, timber, and stone—materials once dismissed as “poor man’s materials” but now being reframed as sustainable, high-performance building solutions.

What Needs to Change is a mindset shift, it is the first step. We must stop associating imported materials with progress and traditional materials with poverty. Mud is not a sign of backwardness, it’s a sign of intelligence.

Policymakers need to act. Building codes must be revised to accommodate and encourage local materials. Governments must lead by example, using traditional materials in public projects. Financial incentives like tax reductions for local manufacturers and low-interest loans for builders who use local materials would accelerate the transition.

Educational institutions must prioritize climate-responsive design. Architecture students should learn both modern engineering and vernacular wisdom. They should study how a Yoruba courtyard creates airflow, how Hausa thick walls regulate temperature, how Igbo pitched roofs manage tropical rain.

And developers need courage. Some already prove it’s possible, like the MAD House at the University of Lagos, where laterite and other traditional materials have been applied in fresh, innovative ways. What’s needed now is scale.

There is a way forward, and it doesn't require abandoning modernity. It requires being smarter about what modernity means.

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Francis Kéré shows us the path: “With proper natural ventilation, adobe buildings are the most accessible tool rural Sahel communities have to combat extreme heat”. His buildings in Burkina Faso and Senegal are contemporary, beautiful, and deeply rooted in local wisdom.

The Senegalese firm Worofila works with local climate, borrowing low-tech, passive cooling techniques from West African vernacular building traditions. Their projects demonstrate that “simple strategies may not sound revolutionary, but in Senegal’s cities, they are”.

Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo explores how African architecture can move beyond stereotypes to embrace modernity while remaining deeply rooted in context. She navigates the intersections of local and global, traditional and contemporary.

This is not nostalgia, and it is not about building mud huts for the sake of tradition. This is about looking at the smartest solutions our ancestors developed, understanding why they worked, and using modern knowledge to make them even better. It’s about building the way we should have been building all along.

Africa’s “modern” constructions are climate disasters. But we can change that. The materials are at our feet. The knowledge is in our memory. The need has never been more urgent.

Our ancestors understood something that we have forgotten in our rush to imitate foreign styles. They knew that a building is not just a shelter, it is a relationship between people, land, and climate. They built with the land, not against it. They created shade where the sun was harsh. They allowed air to move where the heat was oppressive.

We can learn from them. Not to go backward, but to move forward with wisdom. Not to reject technology, but to use it intelligently. Not to lose our identity, but to build it into every structure we raise.

The future of Nigerian architecture, and that of African architecture lies in taking inspiration from our roots while confidently looking ahead. We don’t need to build like Europeans in a tropical climate. We have our own way. It’s time to remember it.
