With a constant cost-of-living crisis and unemployment stubbornly high, who can blame us for chasing affordability? We're all just trying to stretch that rand as far as it can go.
But here's the bitter truth we need to swallow: while we're busy filling our carts with ultra-cheap imports, our local economy is bleeding. Studies are already showing that international platforms like Temu and Shein are costing us jobs – thousands of them! We're talking 8,100 local jobs not materialising by 2024, with predictions of up to 34,000 at risk by 2030. Local retailers can't compete with the pricing or, let's be honest, the regulatory loopholes these giants exploit.
And that, my people, is where the dots connect straight to the heart of political dysfunction and corruption. While the National Consumer Commission is looking into these platforms, pushing for local representation and better tax compliance, it highlights a deeper problem: why are our systems so easily gamed?
Think about it. We're grappling with a system that seems to fail us at every turn, while foreign entities easily infiltrate our market, often at the expense of local livelihoods. And what's making headlines right now? The very systems meant to protect us are crumbling from within! Just this month, our very own National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, was served with a warrant and faces charges in a widening corruption scandal that saw 12 other senior police officers arrested! This is a direct follow-up to the kind of high-level allegations General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made, which were also top searches last year! The Transparency International 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index has us stagnating at a dismal 41 out of 100 for three consecutive years.
It's a vicious cycle: corruption weakens our economy, leaving citizens desperate for cheap goods, which in turn further weakens local industries, making us even more dependent. We need more than just cheap thrills from Temu; we need genuine accountability, strong local policy, and leaders who actually protect our interests, not line their pockets.
