From the streets of Lagos to the tech hubs of Nairobi and Jo'burg, there is an undeniable buzz. Tools like Google Gemini and ChatGPT aren't just buzzwords anymore, people are using them to boost careers, spark creativity, and simplify life.
Kenya: Farmers are using AI chatbots for real-time agricultural advice. Business: AI is being integrated into HR, customer service, and supply chains. The Youth: Africa’s next generation is ready to lead a transformation that is ethical and inclusive.
The "Aproko" (The Gossip/Truth)
While the public is strategizing, what are the governments doing? Sixteen African countries claim to have "national AI strategies," and some public institutions are "quietly" using AI to detect tax leakages or improve customs inspections.
Efficiency is great, but it raises two major questions: Where is the transparency? and Where is the accountability? The Accountability Gap
If AI can track tax dodgers, why isn't it being used to expose massive public sector corruption? In South Africa: We see the #MadlangaCommission grappling with senior police officers and dodgy tenders. In Nigeria: We deal with "woeful governance standards" and broken promises regarding electronic election results.
Why isn't AI being used to: Secure our elections with immutable records? Clean up public funds through algorithmic transparency? Adopt "trustworthy AI frameworks" as quickly as the private sector does? "Is the slow pace of transparent digital transformation simply incompetence, or is it a deliberate effort to maintain opacity?"
The Bottom Line
We need more than just "policy frameworks" and "quiet adoption." We need grit, not just gloss. We need AI for the people, by the people, to truly hold power accountable.
