Our Black Stars are gearing up for some serious action this month, with international friendlies against Austria on March 27th and then locking horns with Germany on March 30th. These are crucial warm-ups as we march towards the FIFA World Cup 2026, where we’re drawn in Group L alongside giants like England, Croatia, and Panama. Domestically, the Ghana Premier League is also heating up! We saw some action recently with Asante Kotoko clinching a 3-0 victory against Nations FC on March 22nd, and Bechem United triumphing 2-1 over Aduana on the same day. Keep an eye out for Hearts of Oak vs Swedru All Blacks coming up on March 29th.
But let’s get real for a minute. Beneath the cheers and the rivalries, a familiar stench lingers – the pervasive rot of corruption that continues to plague our beautiful game and, frankly, our nation as a whole. We all remember the bombshell 'Number 12' exposé that shook the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in 2018, leading to the dissolution of the GFA and the ban of its then-president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, over widespread fraud and bribery allegations. You'd think lessons would be learned, right?
Fast forward to just a few months ago, December 2024, and what do we hear? More damning allegations against the current GFA president, Kurt Okraku, accused of running a scandalous 'pay-to-play' scheme! Players allegedly had to cough up bribes or sign with specific clubs to even get a sniff at national team selection, all while our Black Stars failed to qualify for AFCON for the first time in two decades. Is it any wonder our football is in shambles when the very foundation is built on shady dealings and personal enrichment?
This isn't just about football, people. This is a symptom of a much larger disease infecting our governance. Just yesterday, our Parliament passed the 'Value for Money Office Bill, 2026,' supposedly to ensure transparency and accountability in public contracts. Yet, even as they passed it, the Minority Caucus warned that this new law could ironically worsen corruption. You cannot make this up! We're being choked by a GH₵1 Fuel Levy, while public funds and opportunities are seemingly being siphoned off, from government contracts to national team slots.
From our football pitches to the corridors of power, the story remains the same: a few benefit at the expense of the many. When will we truly demand accountability? When will the ordinary Ghanaian get the value for money they deserve, not just in public projects, but in the pride we place in our national teams? The question isn’t if there’s corruption, it’s when will we collectively say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and hold these people accountable?
