This explosion of interest in AI and emerging tech is a massive green flag for Africa, signalling a continent ready to leapfrog into the future. Our people are hungry for innovation, eager to build, and ready to compete globally. But here's the bitter pill we must swallow, the one that ties directly into the 'political dysfunction' that haunts us:
Just this month, a report revealed that African governments have splurged at least $2 billion on Chinese-built AI surveillance technology across 11 nations! And guess who's leading the pack in this dubious spending? Our very own Nigeria, with a cool $470 million poured into 10,000 'smart cameras.' The worst part? Experts are screaming that these systems are being deployed with little regulation, not primarily for security as claimed, but potentially to monitor human rights activists, political opponents, arrest protesters, and gag journalists! E shock you? It shouldn't.
Then we hear about grand declarations, like the $60 billion pledged for AI across Africa in April 2025, or the more recent $10 billion AI initiative by the African Development Bank Group and UNDP to create 40 million jobs by 2035. Fantastic on paper, right? But the same reports raising questions about the $60 billion pledge highlight the risk of 'political capture, waste, and corruption' undermining these massive initiatives. We have a severe AI skills gap, limited training infrastructure, and issues with access and affordability, yet the money flows into surveillance or grand pronouncements while critical foundational development lags behind. Organizations are even increasing AI training but cutting budgets for it!
While our leaders are making headlines abroad and setting up committees for power solutions, the real power lies in investing transparently and genuinely in our human capital and critical infrastructure, not in tools that could be used to suppress dissent. We can't be talking about an AI-powered future when the present is riddled with misprioritized spending and a glaring lack of accountability.
It's time we demand answers. Where is the transparency for these billions? How are these surveillance systems truly being used? Are these 'initiatives' just photo ops, or are they genuinely designed to empower our youth and not just enrich a few?
