Yes, you heard that right – free, high-level AI education, localized for our African contexts.
And it's not just DeepMind. Google also dished out a free 12-month Google AI Pro plan for university students in places like South Africa, Kenya, and Naija. Microsoft is even aiming to train a million South Africans in AI and cybersecurity by 2026! These aren't small moves; these are pathways to millions of digital jobs predicted by 2030 across Sub-Saharan Africa. The demand for AI skills in South Africa alone surged by 77% in just one year!
Now, here’s where muphu comes in with the hard truth. While these oyinbo companies are doing bits, even with their own strategic interests (some folks are worried about Africa becoming a 'low-cost testing ground' for AI with our weak regulations, imagine!), what exactly are our governments doing? Seriously, what are they doing beyond photo ops and empty promises?
We have a massive youth population, brimming with potential, but they're largely unemployed and underemployed. This isn't just a social problem; it's a ticking time bomb for political instability, a tool for thuggery and unrest that our 'leaders' are all too happy to exploit. When foreign entities are stepping up to offer foundational skills and pathways to the future, why are our own institutions, our own governments, still stuck in the analogue age?
