Not on the football pitch, but in the corridors of power in our own countries?
Take Naija, for instance. Just this month, our House of Reps, in record-breaking speed, passed an amendment to the Electoral Act 2026, banning dual political party membership with a hefty ₦10 million fine and two years in jail! You wonder, is this sudden urgency about genuine accountability or just another power play to consolidate 'giants' and silence 'minnows'? Meanwhile, the 'temporary relief' from Dangote's petrol price reduction barely masks the deeper economic vulnerabilities that leave us at the mercy of global shocks, something our leaders seem perpetually 'unprepared' for. And let's not forget the big energy talks, like President Tinubu's meeting with Eni CEO about OPL 245 and deep offshore development. Will these deals truly benefit the average Nigerian, or will it be another case of the 'giants' feeding their insatiable appetites while we the masses continue to struggle, facing heatwave warnings and unfulfilled promises? The lack of political accountability, clientelism, and vote-buying remain a cancerous stain on our democracy.
Over in Kenya, the story isn't much different. As heavy rains triggered devastating floods across Nairobi and other regions, President Ruto issued emergency response orders. But for how long will we keep reacting to disasters instead of proactive planning and building resilient infrastructure? Where is the accountability for poor urban planning and potentially misused funds that could have prevented such widespread destruction? And talk about distressing, the reports of Kenyans recruited by Russia going missing in Ukraine are alarming. Why are our youths so desperate for opportunities abroad that they fall prey to such dangers? Where is the government's duty to protect its citizens and provide viable alternatives at home? The low voter turnout in the recent UDA grassroots elections speaks volumes about the waning faith in our political processes. And the 'Hustler vs. Dynasty' narrative? Is it just a catchy slogan or are we genuinely seeing a shift towards true representation and not just recycled political families?
Just like Luton fought valiantly, we the citizens must continue to demand better from our 'giants'. This isn't just about football, it's about our lives, our future, and the kind of nations we want to build. We can't afford to be spectators anymore. We must hold them accountable, every single one of them.
