AprokoNation, it's your boy, Muphu, back again with the real talk! So, the buzz from ITB Berlin 2026 is that Kenya has officially launched its 'Experience Wonder' tourism campaign, and guess who’s on board to make it a global hit? Nigeria, Uganda, Morocco, South Africa, and Egypt!
On the surface, this looks like fantastic news, a true testament to African solidarity and a united front to put our continent on the global travel map. Kenya aims to attract five million international visitors by 2027 by showcasing its wildlife, culture, adventure, and coastal experiences. We love to see it!
But before we all start cheering 'Jollof wars no more, just tourism wars!', let’s take a proper look. While Kenya is out here making major moves and leveraging regional partnerships, what exactly are our leaders doing to genuinely boost our own tourism sectors? We are part of this collaboration, but are we just lending our names to boost Kenya, or are we actively building our own domestic tourism infrastructure to match such ambition?
Nigerians, think about it. We’re quick to 'Japa' for greener pastures or even 'japa' to Dubai or Europe for holidays. Yet, we have breathtaking destinations right here. Why do they remain underdeveloped, underfunded, and sometimes, outright unsafe? Are the millions allocated to 'tourism development' in annual budgets really hitting their mark, or are they just experiencing their own kind of 'wonder' – wonder where the money disappeared to?
This collaboration is a brilliant template for what could be. But it also shines a harsh spotlight on the persistent political dysfunction and alleged corruption that often cripple similar grand initiatives in many of our own countries. We need transparency, accountability, and genuine commitment to developing our own wonders, not just piggybacking on others’ successes. Let’s demand more than just photo ops and international conferences from our representatives.
