The man nicknamed 'Terror' for his fierce spirit on the soccer field and in the anti-apartheid struggle, he literally served time on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela, fighting for true liberation and justice for his people. He was a pioneer, the first Premier of the Free State, a Minister of Defence, and later, the founder of COPE, shaking up the political landscape.
His passing, on a day like today, March 4th, 2026, got me thinking deeply. This man dedicated his life to ensuring that the voice of the people mattered, that governance was for the people, by the people. He fought against a system designed to silence and oppress. And as I sit here, honouring his incredible journey, I can't help but look at our own landscape and ask: are we truly honouring the spirit of such sacrifices?
Because right now, while we mourn a man who fought for the right to challenge oppression, our own National Assembly just dropped another bombshell. We're all talking about this new Electoral Act 2026, specifically that Section 138. Una no go believe! They say election results can only be questioned on two grounds now – corrupt practices or non-compliance. And if you dare challenge outside those grounds? Na N5 million fine for your lawyer, and N10 million for you, the petitioner!
Chai! Think about it, my people. A man like Lekota fought for decades so that people could have a voice, could challenge injustice without fear. Now, our own 'democracy' is trying to put a price tag on seeking justice and accountability, making it almost impossible to challenge things like certificate forgery or age falsification. Is this not the very definition of political dysfunction? Is this not how they try to shield themselves, silence critics, and make sure that once they get in, no matter how, their seats are untouchable?
It's like they're telling us: 'You want to complain about how we got here? Better have deep pockets or zip it!' How can we build a true democracy, a nation worthy of the struggles of giants like Lekota, when we're busy legislating away the very tools of accountability? When laws are crafted not to serve justice, but to protect power?
This isn't just about elections; it's about the soul of our nation. It’s about whether we truly believe in the principles Lekota lived and died for. We need to wake up and speak up, because if we don't, these 'leaders' will keep pushing the envelope until the only voices left are theirs. Let's not let their legacy be in vain.
