But this isn't just about individual choices; this is about systemic rot that is eating away at Mother Earth, right here in Nigeria. The kind of rot that makes you wonder if some people actively hate this planet, or maybe just love their pockets more.
While South Africa was ranking high in 2025 searches, showing real public interest in environmental issues, what exactly are we doing? We have floods displacing millions, land degradation, illegal logging, and pollution choking our communities. And guess what? Experts and even the ICPC Chairman themselves have confirmed it: corruption is one of the prominent factors causing this environmental havoc in Nigeria!
Think about it. We have an Ecological Fund, billions of Naira set aside to combat these very problems. N548 BILLION between 2012 and 2021 alone. Yet, what do we see? Reports from 2025 show these funds are repeatedly mismanaged, diverted, and stolen! Former governors caught with their hands in the cookie jar, diverting ecological funds meant to save lives, not enrich pockets. The Climate Change Act of 2021, designed to protect us, is being hindered by this same misallocation.
Nigerians, eight out of ten of us, believe corruption is worsening, and 90% say our government is doing 'fairly badly' or 'very badly' fighting it. And the most painful part? Many fear retaliation if they speak up. This isn't just an 'unpopular opinion,' this is our reality. This is why our environment is degrading, why our people suffer, and why our future looks bleak.
So, as we see 'chaos culture' and 'micro-drama' trending online, let's channel that energy into demanding real action! Let's hold these politicians, these 'leaders' who divert funds meant for our collective survival, accountable. We can't afford to be silent. This Earth Day, let's make it about our power to demand a livable planet, free from the grips of corruption. Enough is enough!
