From South Africa to Kenya, and right here in Naija, the buzz around AI and digital skills has been booming since 2024, and it's not slowing down! We have the fourth-fastest growing developer community globally, with over 872,000 developers! We even have a dedicated AI university now and Microsoft is promising to train a million Nigerians. On paper, it looks like we're ready to conquer the digital world.\n\nOur government, through NITDA, even launched a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) in 2025, complete with 12 goals and five pillars to transform everything from infrastructure to sector-wide adoption. Billions are reportedly earmarked for university AI research. They are even partnering with the World Bank on projects like IDEAS and Ericsson on Connect NextGen to skill up our youth. Sounds good, right? *But wetin dey happen for ground?*\n\nHere’s the bitter truth: while the hype is high, the reality for the average Nigerian is a harsh slap. Despite all these grand plans and billions allocated, AI tool adoption in Nigeria is still embarrassingly low compared to our African counterparts (8.2% vs. Kenya's 42.1%!). Why? The 'payment problem' is a huge barrier! Most AI subscriptions require a USD credit card, which only about 2% of Nigerians possess. Think about it: a $20/month AI subscription costs over N26,000 at current rates! Who exactly are these initiatives designed for if the basic access is a luxury for the privileged few?\n\nThen there's the elephant in the room: **youth unemployment.** Officially, they tell us rates are falling, but on the streets, millions of graduates are still jobless or underemployed, struggling to make ends meet. Over 3.5 million young people enter the labour market *every year* into this uncertainty. Are these "skill acquisition" programs truly equipping them, or are they just elaborate photo opportunities while the real work and funds disappear?\n\nLet's be brutally honest: Nigeria loses approximately **$18 billion annually to corruption**, with over 90% of that linked to procurement and contract fraud in the public sector. So, when we hear about billions for AI infrastructure, for training centres, for digital transformation – how much of that is truly reaching its intended purpose? How much is disappearing into the pockets of the same 'leaders' we see enriching themselves while the nation suffers? Just like the community leader who dipped his hand in the common pot, there's a bigger, more insidious system at play, diverting our collective future.\n\nIt's time we demand real accountability. Just as we're scrutinizing the Electoral Act 2026 for transparency in our votes, we MUST scrutinize every kobo earmarked for our digital future. Our youth's enthusiasm for AI is a goldmine, but if corruption continues to be the bedrock of our system, that goldmine will only benefit a few, leaving the majority behind in the dust.
