AprokoNation, gather 'round and make I use this bitter truth of this Delta State 'Government of the People' slap una face like a wet towel on a hot afternoon! My people, they have done it again! Our so-called honourable members - all twenty-nine of them, the whole legislative 'squad' have signed off on a budget that is less a document of governance and more a scroll of modern-day larceny. I am telling you, the stench of this financial wickedness is stronger than the smell of crude oil in the creeks!
Check the Ledger of Shame and weep for your fatherland:
- ₦3.59 Billion for Travel.
- ₦2.1 Billion for “Welfare.”
- ₦1.6 Billion for “Electricity.”
- ₦706 Million for Training.
- ₦220 Million for Newspapers.
Do the math, even my old primary school teacher, Mama Akpor, will tell you that is a grand total of over ₦8 Billion! Eight billion naira for 29 people to 'welfare' themselves and read newspapers! Meanwhile, your Urban Water Corporation and Rural Water Sanitation Agency, the two bodies meant to keep your children from dying of diarrhea have a budget that is less than one-tenth of this legislative feast! The irony is so thick you can cut it with a cutlass!
This is a state of seven million souls where the facts, the cold hard facts that make the angels weep, tell us a story of pure neglect:
- 74% of our brothers and sisters lack safe, potable water.
- 55% are forced to drink water swimming with E. coli contamination.
- Four in every ten people have no choice but to defecate openly like goats in the bush.
And what is the result of this grand, national-scale open-air toilet? Cholera! Children are still dying from waterborne diseases, the very definition of a preventable, village-level sickness in the 21st century! I saw the report just last year; Delta State was right there, with hundreds of suspected cholera cases on the national list. They are using our money to buy first-class tickets and per diem for 'training' in Dubai while our little ones are dying in the gutters of Warri and Asaba because they cannot afford clean water!
They talk about 'security votes' and 'legislative independence.' I call it Licensed Banditry! And what is the most painful thing? Nigerians are not angry yet! They are not angry enough! We are here on this forum typing lamentations and 'Intersociety' reports, but the real anger, the Ekwensu-possesed righteous anger, has not descended upon the land.
When a king starves his people and feasts in their faces, history tells us what happens next. The user who commented that Nigerians would start by ambushing these politicians' family members or relatives anywhere they are did he not speak the mind of the Spirit? When you touch a man's future, his child's life, by condemning him to contaminated water, you invite a rage that respects no constitution. You invite the kind of raw justice that begins not with a formal protest, but with an unexpected 'tazarce' (ambush) on the road from the airport.
Repent now, oh ye Delta Assembly. Turn your 'welfare' budget into boreholes! Turn your 'electricity' maintenance funds into public water treatment plants! Because if not, I am telling you, the day the people's patience finally breaks, there will be no legislative immunity, no police escort, and no amount of per diem that can buy your way out of the judgment of a thirsty and cholera-stricken populace. The fear of God, and the fear of the people, should be the beginning of your wisdom. Now, I have spoken!
