While the southern zones have solar potential, the northern regions of the country have significantly greater solar potential, with some areas receiving up to 7 kWh/m²/day of solar radiation.

This isn’t just a theory; it’s a proven model. Look at Morocco. The country has a major solar plan in place, with the first part of its 500MW project, the Noor I, coming online in 2016. Morocco, with its power cable to Europe, aims to even sell excess solar energy, demonstrating the viability and profitability of this approach. Similarly, South Africa, another sun-rich nation, had installed over 2 GW of utility-scale solar and 4.4 GW of rooftop solar by 2023, showing that large-scale and decentralized solar can coexist and thrive. For Nigeria, this means building a network of solar farms in states like Sokoto and Borno to power regional grids, bypassing the need for a national grid to carry power thousands of miles.

The South-East & South-South: Igniting the Gas Hub In contrast, the root cause of the power problem in the South-East and South-South isn’t a lack of energy sources, it’s the exact opposite. These regions sit on some of the largest proven natural gas reserves in Africa, with Nigeria having about 206 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven reserves. Yet, we still suffer from a lack of power.

The simple solution here isn’t to pipe gas thousands of miles to central power plants and then send the electricity back via a fragile national grid. It is to do what countries with vast gas reserves, like the United States and Russia, do. The U.S., the world’s largest natural gas producer, generates over a quarter of its electricity from natural gas-fired power plants. They’ve decentralized this model, building a network of plants close to major demand centers and gas fields. The solution is right beneath our feet. We can build a robust network of gas-fired power plants and mini-grids directly in the regions where the gas is. This simplifies the logistics, reduces transmission losses, and creates a more reliable and resilient power supply for the industrial and domestic needs of these regions.

The Rivers & Coasts: Harnessing Hydro and Wind For regions with significant water resources like the Niger and Benue Rivers and coastal states, the “simplistic” solution lies in hydroelectric power. While there are already some major hydro dams, Nigeria has a massive untapped hydropower potential.

Countries across the globe, including Brazil and Canada, have successfully leveraged their rivers for hydropower, making it a cornerstone of their energy mix. Brazil, for instance, generates over 60% of its electricity from hydroelectricity. On a smaller, more decentralized scale, many countries have adopted micro-hydro projects to electrify rural communities, bypassing the need for large, expensive dams.

And let’s not forget the wind. While Nigeria’s wind speeds may not support massive offshore wind farms like those in Denmark or the UK, we have consistent winds along our coasts that are perfect for smaller, decentralized projects. A 2017 study found that some coastal areas in Nigeria, like Ikeja and Calabar, have promising wind speeds. This potential, though small, can be leveraged to power rural and hard-to-reach communities, providing a simple, off-grid solution that bypasses the complexities of the national grid.

A Simpler Future for Power The problem in Nigeria’s power sector seems complicated because we’ve been trying to solve it with complicated, national-level solutions. We’re trying to force a single, intricate machine to serve a diverse and vast country. But the simple genius is to stop trying to untangle the whole knot at once. Instead, let’s find the one thread in each region that, when pulled, can begin to unravel the entire problem.

The answer isn’t a single, monolithic power solution. It’s a collection of decentralized, region-specific power solutions that leverage our diverse resources, a model successfully implemented in countries across the globe. It’s solar in the North, gas in the South-East, and a mix of hydro and wind where it’s most effective. By simplifying our approach and empowering each region to build its own power autonomy, we can finally begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
