If the government can resist the temptation of short-sighted policies and instead champion a strategic, long-term vision, Nigeria could become a global leader in the new energy economy. It has the resources and the intellect. All that is needed is the political will to make it happen. I see a different future, a future where we take our destiny into our own hands.

Imagine a Nigeria that powers itself and the world. It’s not a fantasy. It’s a very real possibility built on the ground beneath our feet. I’m talking about our massive deposits of lithium, the new “white gold” for batteries, and our vast reserves of silica sand, the main ingredient for solar panels. We have these resources in abundance, with verifiable deposits of high-grade lithium in states like Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Kwara. The silica sand is just as plentiful, with huge reserves in places like Delta, Ogun, and Plateau. The raw materials are right here.

The problem has never been a lack of resources, but a lack of a cohesive plan to turn them into an advantage. This is where I see our universities stepping up. I envision a future where our institutions are no longer just places for theoretical learning but are the engines of a new energy revolution. We shouldn’t treat all universities equally, leading to a “mediocrity of equality.” Instead, we should fund and empower a select few to become specialized research hubs.

  • North-West: I see a place like Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, becoming a center for battery technology research. With its proximity to the lithium deposits in Kaduna, ABU could lead the way in developing the next generation of energy storage solutions.

  • South-West: Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, with its strong engineering and materials science programs, could be tasked with researching and developing advanced solar panel technologies, utilizing the silica sand from nearby Ogun.

  • South-South: The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), a traditional hub for oil and gas, could pivot to become a leader in bio-energy and grid integration, ensuring our new energy sources are seamlessly connected.

  • North-Central: The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA) could focus on the processing and purification of these raw materials, turning them from simple minerals into industrial-grade components.

  • South-East: The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) could lead in energy policy and smart grid technology, ensuring our energy transition is equitable and efficient.

  • North-East: Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi could be a hub for research into the lithium deposits found in the state and other renewable sources, leveraging its expertise to drive regional innovation.

These universities, instead of just producing graduates, would be creating patents, building prototypes, and training the next generation of engineers and scientists for a new, homegrown energy industry.

While this long-term strategy takes shape, we can’t wait. The government’s most impactful move today would be to make solar power accessible to every Nigerian. The current reality is that solar equipment is far too expensive. By simply eliminating the high tariffs and customs duties on all solar equipment, panels, inverters, and batteries, we could instantly trigger a solar revolution.

Right now, a single solar panel can cost a Nigerian family between ₦100,000 and ₦200,000, and a full home system can run into millions of naira. If we make these components drastically cheaper, it would stimulate a booming domestic market, create jobs in installation and maintenance, and, most importantly, provide millions of homes and businesses with a reliable source of power.

This isn’t just about electricity; it’s about empowerment. It’s about giving small businesses the power to operate beyond erratic grid supply, enabling students to study at night, and giving our economy the reliable energy it needs to grow. Nigeria has the resources and the intellect. All that’s missing is the political will to remove the barriers and let us build the future we know is possible.
