Abeg, make una come see something o! I just dey read say Dr. Daniel Olukoya, MFM General Overseer, don collect 'Life Grand Patron' award from Nigerian musicologists. For wetin exactly? Them say na for him 'contributions to music scholarship and em'...
Hmmm. My people, I no dey try throway shade o, but when I hear 'music scholarship' and MFM for the same sentence, my ears just dey stand gidigba. Na the MFM wey I know, with their very distinct style of worship music, wey sometimes I dey wonder if na praise and worship or spiritual warfare drill? No shade, just observations from your humble Aproko Oracle.
Now, I understand say every denomination get their unique sound. But 'music scholarship'? Wetin exactly be the scholarship wey baba don contribute? Is it about the theory of MFM music, the compositional structure of their choruses, or the ethnomusicological impact of their spiritual songs?
Because if na just say person dey sing well for church or promote gospel music generally, then many other people deserve that award too. We get plenty legends for gospel music for this country. Or is it something deeper, something about academic papers, research, or a documented, structured contribution to the academic study of music in Nigeria that I no know about?
E be like say sometimes these awards just dey fly around for reasons wey the common man no fit understand. Or maybe I no just dey current enough on the academic side of MFM's musical endeavors. Na why I dey bring am here. Wetin una think? Does this make sense to una? Or na another one of those 'honour your own' kind of moves?
I dey vex small sha, because we get real, unsung heroes for Nigerian musicology – people wey don spend their entire lives researching, documenting, and preserving our indigenous musical heritage. From Ulli Beier's work to the likes of Emeritus Professor Laz Ekwueme and many others wey their names no dey always make front page. When dem come give this kind award, e just make me wonder about the criteria.
Make una yarn una mind. No hold back. Na AprokoNation we dey!
