The passion, the arguments, the 'if only that ref...' – you fit literally feel the tension for the air, from the betting shops to the 'agbo' joints.
And I dey ask myself, why we no dey carry this same energy, this same fire, go confront the real matches that matter? The ones where our own future dey on the line, where our leaders dey play 'ball' with our resources? See as we dey dissect every pass, every foul, every VAR decision for club matches. Luton and Chelsea don meet plenty times, some for FA Cup, some for Premier League, always high stakes. Same for Zamalek and Future, battles in the Egyptian league that get everybody talking. But when government 'foul' us, when they score own-goals with our treasury, when they chop our commonwealth like say na 'suya' – we just dey waka pass like say nothing happen.
Imagine if we demanded accountability from our politicians with the same zeal we demand a penalty kick! Imagine if we protested bad governance with the same vigour we protest a disallowed goal! Our 'pitch' don full of potholes, no light, no good schools, but our 'coaches' dey fly private jets. It's the same pattern, whether na English football or African football – the passion is there, but for some reason, when it comes to holding our own accountable, the whistle suddenly gets swallowed. We see Nigeria and Egypt clash in AFCON, with pride on the line, but where is that pride when it comes to demanding better governance?
This isn't just about football, abeg. It's about what we choose to focus our collective anger and passion on. Are we truly going to let them keep playing 'away games' with our future while we're busy arguing about who should have started as a striker?
