E-commerce is booming across Africa, no doubt. Nigeria's market alone is projected to hit billions in the coming years, driven by smartphones and digital payments. But look closer. These foreign giants like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress are coming in with massive supply chains and prices our local businesses simply cannot match. They operate with minimal local infrastructure, hardly creating any significant jobs on our soil, and often bypass the tax nets that local companies are trapped in.
What does this mean for our own entrepreneurs, our local manufacturers, the small businesses struggling to keep their heads above water? It means they are getting squeezed out. It means capital is flying out of our country, not circulating to build wealth here. While consumers get access to cheaper goods, the long-term cost is the systematic destruction of our local industrial base and job creation capacity.
This isn't an accident. It's a symptom of political dysfunction and a glaring failure of governance. Where are the policies to create a level playing field? Where is the support for local SMEs to innovate and compete? Instead of visionary leadership building a robust, self-sustaining economy, we see a vacuum that foreign players are more than happy to fill.
