A couple of years ago, I had to do extensive work in different African countries, from Zimbabwe to Botswana and Kenya to Zambia.
I often felt homesick. So each time I travelled, I would put on my little CD player, plug in my earphones and play lots of tracks from various Naija artistes.
My favourites were “In the Morning Light, You and I, Bia Nulu, Alleluyah Chime, Walk Right Back, Dancing in the Sun, Forever etc….” in no particular order. The singer was Onyeka Onwenu.
Each time her delightful voice came on, it made me feel as if all was right with the world.
Growing up, I had watched her career go through different stages, as she switched roles from being a journalist, to becoming a singer, an actress and a writer. I always felt she was a far better journalist than an actress.
Then 3 years ago, I bumped into her in a big retail store within my estate. A few girls had seen her before I did, and were clamouring to take a picture with her.
I joined in, and forced myself to discard my aversion for taking photographs. It was worthwhile. She was gracious, kind and interesting.
I saved that picture on my phone but sadly, that phone got lost a few months afterwards.
Last night when I heard she passed away, I was gutted. It felt like losing a precious heirloom, that had been kept safe for so long.
Farewell, Onyeka Onwenu. I still can’t speak about you without feeling teary. You lived. You loved life. You shone brightly. And you didn’t shy away from controversy.
May the angels usher you into the portals of heaven. 🙏 Your presence was a blessing to many. Your songs were a wonderful gift.
