Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy has recently found himself at the center of controversy after allegedly disrespecting the Grammy Award-winning Reggae band Steel Pulse during the Reggae Summer Jam Festival in Germany. The incident has sparked outrage among Reggae fans and raised questions about Burna Boy’s behavior.
According to Steel Pulse singer and guitarist David “Electric” Hinds, Burna Boy arrived at the festival with a large entourage and demanded additional dressing rooms. In an Instagram post, Hinds expressed his frustration, recounting how Burna Boy’s security team attempted to force Steel Pulse out of their dressing room to accommodate the his team. The situation escalated, leading to a tense standoff and even the construction of a barricade between the two dressing rooms.
Hinds criticized Burna Boy’s actions, emphasizing that they were unbecoming and did not align with the ethos of Reggae music. He called on reggae festivals to recognize the importance of treating artists with respect and maintaining the genre’s values of peace, love, and unity.
Reggae fans rallied behind Steel Pulse, expressing their disapproval of Burna Boy’s behavior. Lloyd Laing of Reggae University labeled Burna Boy as “an absolute nobody” compared to the legendary impact of Steel Pulse. Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Burna Boy’s actions were unacceptable and disrespectful to the genre’s legacy.
