In a strategic move aimed at securing a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Augustine Eguavoen as the interim head coach of the Super Eagles. This decision follows the unexpected withdrawal of German coach Bruno Labbadia due to tax disputes.
Eguavoen, who is also the Technical Director of the NFF, has a wealth of experience, having previously managed the Super Eagles on three occasions. His appointment is seen as a stabilizing factor for the team as they prepare for crucial qualifying matches against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic and the Amavubi of Rwanda.
To bolster his coaching team, Eguavoen has selected Fidelis Ilechukwu, the head coach of Enugu Rangers, and Daniel Ogunmodede of Remo Stars. The coaching team will also include Tomaz Zorec, a fitness trainer from Slovenia, goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa, and match analyst Eboboritse Uwejamomere.
The Super Eagles will host the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, followed by an away match against Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali next Tuesday. Eguavoen’s leadership and the expertise of his newly assembled team are expected to bring a fresh approach and renewed vigor to the Super Eagles’ campaign.
